Down-Ballot Data Visualizations

My culminating thesis project at Colorado College aimed to make down-ballot races in the state of Colorado easier for journalists to cover and for readers to visualize. Coloradovotevisuals.com is a publicly available site that allows journalists and citizens alike to create data visualizations from data sourced from the Colorado Secretary of State’s database going back to the 1970s. This resource provides journalists with easily embeddable, high quality graphics for all down-ballot races in the state.

A newsroom's limited capacity to cover down-ballot races and trends with accurate graphics casts more focus on national politics and legislation.

Map

The County Level Pass/Fail Density Map allows users to search by year and proposition to see the density of support for a given proposition by county.

Comparison

The Proposition Comparison visualizer allows users to pick two separate years and two propositions within those years. This visualization aims to support users comparing two similar propositions on a county level to see how the level of support within counties has changed over time.

Histogram

The County Level Pass/Fail Histogram visualization allows users another way to think about county level support for propositions.
